Members
The Board of Supervisors appoints one at-large member and one at-large
alternate to the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority Board of
Directors.
Requirements
Appointees should be employed or knowledgeable in the area of solid
waste and/or recycling for their respective jurisdiction so that they
can provide input regarding their respective locality’s viewpoint on
various solid waste issues.
Term
The terms for the Board of Directors are 3 years.
CVWMA mandates 1 to 4-year terms for Board of Director Members.
There is no CVWMA limit on
the number of consecutive terms an appointee may serve.
Overview
The CVWMA is a public service authority that implements solid waste management and recycling programs for 13 local governments. Since its formation in 1990, the CVWMA has endeavored to provide efficient and economical waste management and recycling solutions for its member jurisdictions:

Purpose
The CVWMA was created in December 1990 to assist member localities with satisfying Virginia’s recycling requirement. A Board of Directors consisting of one or more representatives appointed by each of the member jurisdictions governs the operations of the CVWMA. The Authority may contract for and maintain any garbage and refuse collection, transfer and disposal program or system within the cities, counties or town that are members of the CVWMA. This can include:
Household hazardous waste management and disposal
Landfill operation
Recycling as mandated by law or otherwise
Waste material recovery
Waste reduction and similar programs or systems
Mission
To foster and carry out the purpose of the Authority, which is to:
Ash management
Household hazardous waste management and disposal
Landfill operation
Plan, acquire, construct, reconstruct, improve, extend, operate, contract for and maintain any garbage and refuse collection
Recycling as mandated by law or otherwise
Resource recovery
Sludge disposal from water and wastewater treatment facilities
Transfer and disposal program or system including waste reduction
Waste incineration
Waste material recovery and similar programs or systems
