Powhatan County Transfer Station
Since 1986 when Powhatan County closed its landfill, it has
operated a transfer station on Mitchell Road just north of Anderson
Highway. County residents may dispose of household trash and can
recycle certain items as per the list below.
In 1990,
Powhatan joined the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA),
a public service authority which includes 13 jurisdictions in Central Virginia.
CVWMA works to plan and implement regional solutions to the common problem
arising from solid waste management.
One area CVWMA
is involved in is recycling. In 1989, the Virginia General
Assembly passed a law requiring local governments to recycle 25%.
That goal was met through County and CVWMA cooperation. CVWMA also
provides recycling bins at the transfer station.
Items accepted in the Powhatan
recycling program include:
Newspapers
and inserts: Brown paper bags accepted, no string
Mixed papers:
Flatten corrugated boxes, junk mail, envelopes, cereal boxes, dry food
boxes, catalogues, magazines, telephone books, any tearable
paper
product or container.
No plastic bags.
Glass:
Rinsed
brown, green, and clear glass, with the bands and lids removed: labels
can
remain on the bottles and jars. No plastic bags.
Bimetal:
Aluminum cans, metal food cans, foil, foil containers. Rinse and crush.
Labels do
not need to be removed.
Metal: A
fee of $20 is charged to remove Freon in disposed refrigerators,
freezers, and air
conditioners. Stoves, washing machines, water heaters, and metal racks are accepted at
no
charge, as well as auto parts free from oil and gas.
Antifreeze, Oil, and Oil
filters: Oil and antifreeze
should be clean of debris such as grass
and dirt particles and go into
separate drums. Filters should be put into the bin by
themselves. No
cardboard boxes or carrying containers are accepted; these should be
disposed of in the trash bin.
Tires:
All sizes are accepted. A nominal fee is charged for collection.
Plastics
are not being recycled in Powhatan but are accepted at
Southeast Recycling (just
south of the Diamond, off Leigh Street, 1350 N. Myers Street, phone
359-1080)
Hours of operation
for the transfer station are:
Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
