Real Estate taxes in Powhatan County are due twice a year. The due dates are June 5th and December 5th. Bills are always mailed out at least 30 days prior to the due date. Any tax paid for a parcel will automatically be applied to the oldest year tax due on that parcel. Mortgage companies must make a written request for each bill cycle in order to receive the tax bill from us. If you received your real estate tax bill and the mortgage company should pay it, you should contact the mortgage company immediately and forward the bill to them. You may request a receipt for the tax paid by enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Penalty is applied the next business day after the bill is due and is an automatic 10% of the unpaid portion of the bill. Interest begins to accrue at the rate of 10% per year beginning July 1st for the 1st and January 1st for the 2nd half due.

If you do not receive your bill, you must contact the Treasurer's Office prior to the due date to avoid penalty. If you sold the property of which you received the bill, please contact us immediately so that we can bill the new owner. Never throw bills away or ignore them. You must also notify the Commissioner of Revenue of any address change, in order for the bill to be sent to the correct address.

Many people pay their real estate bills by mail or use the outside drop box, located at the end of the building to avoid the lines. All you need is a copy of the bill being paid and the check or money order enclosed in an envelope. Please do not put cash in the mail or outside drop box.

For your convenience you can mail your payment along with a copy of the bill being paid or place it in our drop box outside the building.

All payments should be mailed to:
