Personal Property taxes are paid once
a year in Powhatan County and are billed for the vehicles you owned on
January 1st of the current year. If
you sold a vehicle and purchased another vehicle during that year, you
will still pay on the vehicle you had as of January 1st, not the
recently purchased vehicle. All payments will be applied to the oldest
year tax due for personal property in that name, not a particular
vehicle. If you disagree with any assessment on your bill, you must contact the Commissioner of Revenue regarding the assessment. The Treasurer's Office has no authority to abate any portion of your tax. Governor Gilmore's Act for Personal Property Taxes The tax on the first $20,000 of value of your personal car, motorcycle, and pickup or panel truck under 7501 gross weight, which is a qualifying vehicle, will be reduced 70% for the year 2001 and should be 100% for 2002. For qualifying vehicles valued at $1,000 or less, your obligation to pay this tax has been eliminated. These reductions are based on the local tax rates in effect on August 1, 1997. Contact the Treasurer's Office with any questions. For your convenience you can mail your payment along with a copy of the bill being paid or place it in our drop box outside the building.
