Although the School Board is elected by a specific constituency, the Board acts as a whole, in the best interests of all the children of Powhatan County. Board members welcome communications from citizens, however, concerns should be addressed to school staff first.
The Powhatan County School Board meets regularly on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm at Pocahontas Elementary School. Occasionally, meeting dates are changed and special meetings are held. These changes are publicized.
All School Board meetings are open to the public. Agendas are available at the meetings and two public comment periods are provided. The School Board's responsibilities include policy making, developing and approving budgets, appointing advisory committees, hiring employees, hiring and evaluating the Superintendent and other duties prescribed by law. The main function of the School Board is to approve policies which are the guidelines followed by the school division.
It is the responsibility of the Superintendent to ensure those polices are carried out. Copies of the Policy Manual are located in the school libraries, public library and Central Office.
