9.  Douthat State Park - 540-862-8100

Location: Near Clifton Forge.  Exit 27 off Interstate 64 to State Route 629, then 7 miles north.

A family tradition for more than 50 years, Douthat is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for the role its design played in the development of parks nationwide.

Amid some of Virginia's most breathtaking mountain scenery, visitors can enjoy interpretive programs and special events, a conference facility, a restaurant overlooking the water, a sandy swimming beach, bathhouse, cabins, more than 40 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, a 100+ seat amphitheater, playgrounds, picnic areas in scenic settings, tent and trailer campgrounds, and a 50-acre lake stocked with trout.

The park also features two completely furnished lodges that accommodate 15 and 18 guests each.

32.  Shenandoah River "Andy Guest" State Park -  540-622-6840

Location: Warren County.  Just off U.S. 340 between Front Royal and Luray.  Portions of the park border
U.S. 340 on the east and the South Fork Shenandoah River on the west.

Situated on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River with nearly 1,700 acres along six miles of shoreline, Virginia's newest state park opened in May 1999.  A large riverside picnic area with shelters, river access, and a car-top launch make this a popular destination for families, anglers, and canoeists alike.  Ten primitive campsites, ranging from individual to group size, are available.  With more than 13 miles of trails, the park has plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
