| The
Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department was established
in 1950. The original building was wooden
with a dirt floor, located behind the courthouse.
The fire department started with a 1935 Ford fire
engine that was purchased for $400 and refurbished
for an additional $1,000.
Company 2 is
located in Huguenot, Company 3 in Macon, and
Company 4 in Fine Creek were established in the
1970’s. Company 5 in Deep Creek is the
department’s newest, opening its doors in 1994.
The
five fire companies operate on a total volunteer

and effort. Firefighters put in many hours of work
performing different activities such as:
responding to calls, training, fund raising,
apparatus maintenance and attending meetings.
