Coalition of Churches ...

The Coalition of Powhatan Churches was organized September 1996.  Now, more than 25 churches in the county have joined this organization; the congregations are volunteering to assist those in need in Powhatan County. Civic organizations, local clubs, and individuals without church affiliations are supporting the Coalitions work.  This active group of hundreds of volunteers has been busy putting together programs that will assist the Powhatan-Goochland Community Action Agency.  This agency provides assistance for low-income families and individuals in Powhatan.

The Coalition of Powhatan Churches is now providing that extended help when funds of the agency cannot meet the needs of indigent residents.  More than 100 cases have received help from the Coalition since its inception.  Many of these individuals/families have received help multiple times.  Assistance has been given to help with electric bills, fuel assistance, mortgage payments, clothing, transportation, home repairs, and personal needs as in the mentor program.

One particular case has been a combination of many of these areas.  Beginning with a simple request for a home cooked meal from a young man, a minister from the Coalition group went to visit this person to find out more about his situation.  He found that this person needed so much more than this simple request.  The members of the Coalition have spent countless hours helping this young man, a diabetic, who had gradually lost his eyesight, and has no family to look after his everyday needs or take care of his medical needs.  With the loss of his income, as well as his eyesight, every aspect of normal life gave way to the fear of how to live the remainder of his life with little or no help.  Since the Coalition was introduced to this young man, they have been able to provide good nutritional meals, to do major plumbing repairs and upgrade a broken-down system, some yard work, and to provide transportation for doctors and hospital visits.  Most of all the people of the Coalition have let this man know that there are people who really do care about his welfare.  Their efforts have not been in vain, for the once unhealthy Powhatan citizen has grown healthier as the weeks unfold.  He has a future now, where one was almost lost.

The dream of the Coalition of Powhatan Churches is to bring back a future to those who think there is no future and give them dignity to their lives once again.  The Coalition believes that when all people in the community bind together to accomplish this mission all things are possible.  The wide range of professions, talents, energies, and concern for each other has proven to be the ingredients to help those of us who need assistance.
